Learn about a year-long arc of learning designed and put into practice to coach and retain novice English language development teachers within an urban Tulsa public school district on the competencies needed for successful instruction of English Learners. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge to design their own arcs of learning to empower ELD staff to promote English, literacy, and content acquisition.

Participants will learn about the complexities of building and effectively utilizing an arc of learning, a yearlong professional development model, to benefit teachers providing ELD services. They will discover how guiding principles established in our district’s EL Success Plan were aligned with coaching visits, professional learning seminars, Saturday seminars, and virtual book studies to provide teachers with continued support and guided pedagogical instruction. As a result, this practice can be replicated and implemented to develop a culture of professional learning.

District leaders and administrators will be introduced to guiding principles during this presentation based on the educator competencies reflecting a compilation of research-based best practices, including: WIDA Standards Framework, Six Key Principles for ELL Instruction, and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP). Participants will read and discuss three examples of guiding principles behind the provision of English Language services and determine what the focus of an arc of learning could be based on those principles for their individual districts.

Participants will discuss guiding principles with colleagues and then develop and write a draft of a personalized professional development plan based on the arc of learning model. Using a provided template, participants will begin to develop a scope and sequence of professional learning that meets the needs of their district.
